When Disaster Strikes: Your Guide to Filing an Insurance Claim

Marix Hughes | The Hughes Agency

Around here, we know storms are just part of life. One minute everything is calm, the next the sirens are going off and the sky looks like it means business. When that happens, it’s scary, overwhelming, and emotional. But this is exactly why you have us.

At The Hughes Agency, we don’t just sell policies. We walk with families through some of their hardest days. If a tornado or severe storm hits, here’s what I want you to remember.

First Things First — Stay Safe

Nothing in your house is more important than the people inside it.

Before you worry about claims, pictures, or anything else:

  • Stay away from downed power lines

  • Watch for glass, debris, and unstable structures

  • Leave the home if it’s not safe

  • Follow local emergency guidance

Once everything is secure, then we move to the next step.

Document Everything (When It’s Safe)

Your phone becomes your best tool.

Take photos and videos of:

  • Roof damage

  • Broken windows

  • Water damage

  • Structural issues

  • Damaged furniture, electronics, clothing, etc.

Do not start throwing things away right away. I know it’s tempting, but damaged items help support your claim.

Call Us Right Away

This is where having a local agent truly matters.

When you contact The Hughes Agency, we will:

  • Help you start the claim

  • Explain your deductible and coverage

  • Tell you exactly what happens next

  • Work with the adjuster

  • Advocate for you if something doesn’t look right

You don’t have to figure this out alone. That’s our job.

Prevent More Damage

After a storm, insurance expects homeowners to take reasonable steps to keep things from getting worse.

That could mean:

  • Putting a tarp on the roof

  • Boarding up broken windows

  • Removing standing water if it’s safe

Keep your receipts for any temporary repairs. Many of those costs can be reimbursed.

The Best Claims Start Before the Storm

Preparation makes everything smoother.

Make a Home Inventory

Walk through your home with your phone and record each room. Open closets, drawers, cabinets. Talk through what you see. Store that video in the cloud.

Protect Important Documents

Have copies (digital or in a waterproof container) of:

  • Insurance policies

  • IDs

  • Mortgage paperwork

  • Birth certificates

Know Your Coverage

Do you know your deductible? Your dwelling limit? Your personal property coverage? If not, let’s talk before storm season gets here.
